How to improve your CRS
Small changes can add up. Here are the biggest levers ranked by impact.
Get a Provincial Nominee (PNP)
Saskatchewan SINP, Ontario OINP, Alberta AAIP, BC PNP, Manitoba MPNP — each with different criteria. 600 bonus points = almost guaranteed ITA.
Score CLB 9+ in French (TEF/TCF)
If you can reach CLB 7+ in French with CLB 5+ English, you unlock the 'French proficiency' draw stream — which has had cutoffs as low as 410.
Add 6-12 months of Canadian work experience
If you can enter on a work permit (intra-company transfer, Global Talent Stream, spousal open work), Canadian experience is the single highest-value ongoing boost.
Retake IELTS/CELPIP to push first language to CLB 10
Going from CLB 9 to CLB 10 in all 4 skills adds 8 points per skill × 4 = 32 points. For most Indian applicants this is a faster ROI than re-education.
Canadian post-secondary study
A 1-2 year program in Canada adds 15 pts; 3+ year program adds 30 pts. Also qualifies for PGWP after study.
Sibling in Canada (citizen/PR)
A brother or sister (same mother/father) who is a Canadian citizen or PR. Must be over 18, living in Canada.
