These requirements apply to ALL Hungary visa types. Violations mean your application will be rejected — read each one carefully.
- 1Hungary processes Indian applications through TWO offices: Embassy of Hungary, New Delhi (north India) and Consulate General of Hungary, Mumbai (south & west: Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Sri Lanka). Applying at the wrong jurisdiction means your file gets returned without decision.
- 2All applications submit through VFS Joint Visa Application Centre — biometrics are mandatory on long-term D applications (₹1,920 separate service charge).
- 3Photo specification: 35–40mm wide passport-size, color, white background, no head-dress (except religious), no glasses reflection — slightly different from the typical 35×45mm Schengen photo.
- 4Apply at least 15 calendar days before travel; max 6 months before. Files with less than 15 days' lead may be returned without decision.
- 5Travel medical insurance must be from a Hungary-Embassy-approved Indian insurer with €30,000 minimum coverage and Schengen-wide validity (accident + illness + medical emergency + repatriation).
- 6Passport must be valid at least 3 months beyond intended stay (D visas need ≥18 months), have at least 2 blank pages, and have been issued within the previous 10 years. Handwritten passports issued after 1 April 2010 are NOT accepted; passports with manual corrections in the bio-data page are NOT accepted.
- 7ALL documents marked with (*) must be in ORIGINAL — photocopies are not enough.
- 8Sri Lanka nationals must apply at the German Embassy Colombo (which issues Hungary visas on Hungary's behalf), not at India centres.
- 9The mere possession of a Hungary visa does NOT confer automatic right of entry — the Schengen Border Officer at first point of entry can still refuse admission if doubts arise about the visit's purpose.

- Indian spouses of EU/EEA citizens (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland included)
- Indian partners in registered partnership recognized in the EEA member state
- Direct descendants under 21 OR dependent — applicant or spouse's children
- Dependent direct relatives in the ascending line (parents / grandparents) — applicant or spouse's
- Travelling together OR joining the EU/EEA family member to/in Hungary
Not eligible under this visa:
- Family members of Hungarian citizens specifically — for stays >90 days, apply for Type D Family Reunification (the C-EEA route was removed 01/01/2019)

Apply via Hungary if your itinerary spends most time (or has its main purpose) there. If splitting time evenly, apply through the country of first entry.
Identify the right India jurisdiction
South & west India (Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Cochin, Pune, Goa, Puducherry, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad) → Consulate General Mumbai. Rest of India + Bhutan + Nepal → Embassy New Delhi. Wrong jurisdiction = returned without decision.
Complete the online VFS application form
Use the form for your zone (Mumbai/west has a separate form). Print and sign.
Gather all required documents
Use the checklist for your visa category. Originals where marked (*), with stamps and signatures from the issuing authority where required. Insurance from a Hungary-Embassy-approved Indian insurer only.
Book your VFS appointment

Submit at VFS + biometrics + pay fees
Attend in person. Pay visa fee (₹9,600 adult / ₹4,800 child 6–12 / ₹0 child <6) + ₹2,133 service fee. Biometrics taken at the centre unless reusable from a prior Schengen application within 59 months.
Wait for the decision (15 calendar days)
Track via VFS website. The Embassy / Consulate may call you for an interview or request additional documents.

- If the EU/EEA family member is travelling separately and you're joining them, get them to send a Hungarian-notarized invitation in advance.
- Marriage certificates from non-EU jurisdictions (e.g. India) — get apostilled by MEA AND make sure the relationship is also entered in an EU register where possible. Hungary is strict here.
- Service fee + courier still apply — plan ₹2,500–3,000 even though the visa itself is free.
