Hungary Study Visa (Long-Term Type D / Residence Permit)
The Hungary Study Visa (Long-Term Type D / Residence Permit for the Purpose of Study) is for Indian students enrolled in long-term courses at Hungarian universities, polytechnics, or approved institutions — typically Bachelor's, Master's, PhD, or extended diploma programmes lasting >90 days. Hungary's Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship makes Hungary a popular destination for Indian students. Apply via VFS at the correct India jurisdiction; the deciding office is the Hungarian National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing.

Hungary — Full Schengen member · Two India jurisdictions
One Hungary visa = all 29 Schengen countries. But the right Indian jurisdiction is non-negotiable.
Hungary processes Indian applications through TWO offices: the Embassy in New Delhi for north India, and the Consulate General in Mumbai for south & west (Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Cochin, Pune, Goa, Puducherry, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad). Submit to the wrong one and your file is returned without a decision. All applications go via VFS Joint Visa Application Centre.
29 Schengen countries
Full Schengen member — Hungary visa unlocks the whole zone during validity, not just Hungary.
15 calendar days
Minimum processing. Apply at least 15 days before travel; max six months in advance.
VFS Joint Centre
All submissions via VFS — biometrics required on long-term D visas (₹1,920 extra service fee).

Special Instructions — Read Before Applying
These requirements apply to ALL Hungary visa types. Violations mean your application will be rejected — read each one carefully.
- 1Hungary processes Indian applications through TWO offices: Embassy of Hungary, New Delhi (north India) and Consulate General of Hungary, Mumbai (south & west: Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Sri Lanka). Applying at the wrong jurisdiction means your file gets returned without decision.
- 2All applications submit through VFS Joint Visa Application Centre — biometrics are mandatory on long-term D applications (₹1,920 separate service charge).
- 3Photo specification: 35–40mm wide passport-size, color, white background, no head-dress (except religious), no glasses reflection — slightly different from the typical 35×45mm Schengen photo.
- 4Apply at least 15 calendar days before travel; max 6 months before. Files with less than 15 days' lead may be returned without decision.
- 5Travel medical insurance must be from a Hungary-Embassy-approved Indian insurer with €30,000 minimum coverage and Schengen-wide validity (accident + illness + medical emergency + repatriation).
- 6Passport must be valid at least 3 months beyond intended stay (D visas need ≥18 months), have at least 2 blank pages, and have been issued within the previous 10 years. Handwritten passports issued after 1 April 2010 are NOT accepted; passports with manual corrections in the bio-data page are NOT accepted.
- 7ALL documents marked with (*) must be in ORIGINAL — photocopies are not enough.
- 8Sri Lanka nationals must apply at the German Embassy Colombo (which issues Hungary visas on Hungary's behalf), not at India centres.
- 9The mere possession of a Hungary visa does NOT confer automatic right of entry — the Schengen Border Officer at first point of entry can still refuse admission if doubts arise about the visit's purpose.
- 10All educational certificates (10th, 12th, Bachelor's, etc.) must be apostilled by MEA where required by the Hungarian institution.
- 11Birth certificate must be in English with MEA Apostille Attestation.
- 12Application form is the long-term Residence Permit form + Appendix 9.13 (Study) — different from the short-stay Schengen form.
- 13Holder MUST apply for a Hungarian residence permit on arrival — the entry D visa alone is not the long-term permit.
Who Can Apply
- Indian students with confirmed admission to a Hungarian higher-education institution
- Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship holders
- PhD researchers, exchange students on programmes >90 days
Not eligible under this visa:
- Courses ≤90 days — apply for Educational Training (Type C) instead

Fees (in INR)
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Hungary Long-Term National D visa fee | ₹11,740 |
| VFS biometrics service charge — D visa | ₹1,920 |
Visa fees are set by the Embassy of Hungary in INR and are non-refundable regardless of outcome. Children under 6 are visa-fee-exempt; school pupils, students, postgraduates, researchers attending scientific events, family members of EU/EEA citizens, and accompanying teachers may also be visa-fee-exempt — confirm at submission. Diplomatic and service passport holders are exempt from the visa fee. Long-term D visas carry a separate ₹1,920 biometrics service charge on top of the visa fee. 💡 Pro Tips
- Stipendium Hungaricum awardees get a streamlined process — coordinate with the awarding Hungarian institution from day one.
- Apply 8–12 weeks before semester start. Hungarian universities typically have Sept and Feb intakes.

Common Rejection Reasons
- 1.Vague motivation letter or unclear post-study plan
- 2.Insufficient financial-coverage proof (scholarship + sponsor combination weak)
- 3.Educational documents not apostilled
- 4.Language proficiency certificate missing
- 5.Wrong India jurisdiction
